Rupert Loydell revisits Russell Hoban's first eight novels as reissued in spring 2021 with new Eduardo Paolozzi covers in the Penguin Modern Classics imprint; also touches on his later books.
4qating is 4weirdos. And I love it. On the 4th of February this year, I saw a band at an ex-Convent here in Melbourne: Kurt Vile and The Violators. Vile is from Landsdowne, Philadelphia, which is not the same as Russ' hometown of Lansdale, Philadelphia. On the night I thought it was, however, and so it felt great to 4qate at the gig. I think a few drunk hipsters made notes in their phones.
I usually pick a short quotation for the SA4QE event, but this year I decided to go long. This one relates to Russ's native state, Pennsylvania, which happens to be mine, too. Although I did not get a picture, I did set the quotation free and let it be found. Because it is about water, I left it propped up in front of a display of fountains, all running, in a store named Trax.
Jake Wilson, a singer/songwriter who provided editorial input into Russell Hoban's final novel, is travelling to the Soonchildesque wastes of Antarctica in February to perform songs about Captain Scott.
